S24O, Fish Fridays

Just a short post to prompt you to consider a S24O

AKA, Go ride your bike after whatever you do that day, work, chores, bike prep. Then sleep outside. Then ride home! Easy peasy!

Four cyclists on a gravel road

You could do this in a destination, but I find it energizing to ride to / from home. So when some new friends invited me out to a fish fry with a camping trip, I was so down!

I prepped my gear the night before, as I am in the middle of a move, I didn’t want to pull everything out, so i kept it simple with 2 panniers, you could just as easily use a backpack. Don’t overplan! The day of I rode to work, and then to their house afterwards. After some final tweaks we rode to a bar outside of town.

Here in Northern Minnesota, Friday night fish fries are the thing of the summer. The bar was packed! We actually bailed on waiting an hour and went to the only other bar in the township. After some fried fish (and fried oreos!) we continued rolling north.

There were plenty of small mechanicals, everyone had one or another. Just because it is a short trip, don’t forget your repair kit! (I’ll do a more detailed repair kit post in the future and link it here, see below for the basic rundown). The S24O can serve as a perfect gear shakeout ride in preparation for a longer journey.

Since we ate out, we didn’t need to make dinner, and rode into the night, pitched our camp, and went to sleep.

We woke up, made some coffee and ate cookies, then biked home, for me it was straight back to work! It’s still pretty chilly up here, and we found some ice on the trail.

Since you’re not out for long, you can make little changes to simplify your gear, or you can run a full expedition kit to test it! There are no rules! I never know whether to bring more creature comforts or go more spartan, because after all “it’s only one night”. You’ll maybe forget something, but it’s easy to learn to improvise and problem solve on an overnighter

Toothbrushes and a tree branch

I forgot a toothbrush… The spruce tip was tasty and worked OK

At work again, I felt energized, having had a whole adventure the morning before!

For other inspirations, I can recommend the book Microadventures by Alastair Humphreys

Where are you going to go? Send me an email if you are stoked on an upcoming trip, or have any questions for me!
